COLUMBUS

School’s director to retire in June

Carol Alderman, executive director of the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science for the past four years, will retire in June.

Alderman, 50, was hired in 2004 by the state Board of Education to replace Joe Portera, who died earlier that year.

The state Board of Education will hire a successor. Tuesday is the deadline for applications.The salary is nearly $94,000 a year.

The residential high school enrolling juniors and seniors from throughout the state is located on the Mississippi University for Women campus.

METRO AREA

Want to give blood? Several drives set

Mississippi Blood Services has scheduled several blood drives in the metro area over the next couple of weeks.

Donors will receive a T-shirt.

A donor coach will be in the parking lot at most locations.

Curves of Jackson will hold its blood drive from 3-7:30 p.m. today.

Provine High School will have its blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Holy Ghost Catholic Church sponsored by The Knights of Peter Claver Court will hold a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Rankin Medical Center’s blood drive will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 2nd floor lobby.

University of Mississippi Medical Center will have a blood drive March 6-7 from 1-5 p.m. each day. The donor coach will be parked at Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children.

Greater Pearlie Grove Missionary Baptist Church will hold a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 9 in the Fellowship Hall.

All donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and have a valid ID.

Public hearing on Hyatt hotel planned

A public hearing is scheduled March 6 at City Hall regarding the Hyatt Place Hotel.

Hotel representatives are seeking a special exception conditional use permit from the city to continue building the six-story hotel at Renaissance at Colony Park.

A group of residents opposed to the hotel say the Hyatt representatives did not follow procedure for a special exception to allow the building to exceed the maximum four-story height limit in the city.

The hearing is set for 6 p.m.

Children’s home plans to dedicate campus

Mississippi Children’s Home Services’ staff and board members will dedicate the North Campus property at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The unveiling will be at the entrance of the new 21-acre campus at North West Street and Woodrow Wilson Avenue. Plans for the campus include three residential cottages and an arts and education building.

Established in 1912, Mississippi Children’s Home Services served more than 10,000 individuals statewide in 2007. Through its affiliates Mississippi Children’s Home Society and CARES Center Inc., the agency offers an array of programs including adoption, psychiatric residential treatment, substance abuse treatment, therapeutic foster care, children’s shelters, special education, home-based services, family preservation services and peer prevention education.
